Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest – A GREAT Day Trip while in Murphy NC

The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is a great spot to take your family while you’re in Murphy, NC. No matter your age, condition, you name it, you can really enjoy the Forest. It has some of the BIGGEST trees you’ll ever see! It has a wonderful hiking trail that is rated as easy, so it’s perfect for families. The shape of the trail is a Figure 8, and you can choose to do all or half of it. In addition to the SUPERSIZED trees, you’ll find there are some gorgeous, rushing creeks along with very well maintained facilities. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the day. If you need directions to get there from Murphy, scroll toward the bottom and we’ve included them.

When we went, we took my parents and they had an absolutely great time! We brought sandwiches and made a day of it and ate overlooking amazing scenery and mountain views. Here are some of our pictures we took while we were there:

Directions to get there: From Murphy, take 74/129 headed East through Andrews. Keep going as it narrows from a 4 lane down to 2. You will make a left in Topton on 129 (also known as Tallulah Rd.). Follow this road all the way into Robbinsville and you will begin to see signs for Joyce Kilmer. You’ll pass a hotel, McDonald’s, and several other businesses. You will make a left on 143 (also called Tapoco Rd.) and follow it for roughly 5 miles or so to a stop sign. You will turn left onto Joyce Kilmer Rd and follow the signs the rest of the way in! Once you get in Robbinsville, just follow the signs – they’ll get you there with no problem. Enjoy and be sure to come back and comment how your trip went! We’d love to hear it.

The Chamber of Commerce that services the Murphy NC and Cherokee County area is absolutely outstanding! There are several folks who are directly responsible for making the Chamber a success and extremely beneficial for both folks coming to the area and those who live here in Cherokee County. Phyllis Black is the current director. Nancy Lane is also in their office along with several other really great folks who are always friendly! 🙂

I couldn’t build a home in Murphy NC for that price!

Home in Murphy NC prices have been something that’s been all over the news, the internet – you name it. It’s constantly being watched because its a huge part of our economy and it’s a huge part of our personal livelihood and interests. It’s a great topic of conversation, and here in Murphy NC, homes are selling for some incredible prices.

Several years back, you would have been able to build a home and have instant equity – which is why there were so many “spec” homes being built. Today, you can’t build most homes back for the price you can buy them for. If you’ve been considering a home, it may certainly benefit your pocket book and even stress level because building can be quite stressful! I encourage you to look at homes for sale to see if you can find one that fits your needs because in the long run, you can get more for your money.

For Example:

Building a Home from Scratch:

This brand new chalet home can be built for $149,500 if you go with the builder’s package (which is quite nice I might add) without doing any additional upgrades.

Now, add in this piece of land that is quite nice with a mountain view and community water so you can save the cost of drilling a well.

Combine them together and you’ve spent approximately $180,000, assuming you didn’t do any upgrades or have any issues come up while you’re building (read: there’s always an issue that costs more, so $180,000 is conservative)

NOW – What if you bought something already built:

This home is right about the same size with a full FINISHED basement and the double car garage, and this chalet home is currently for sale for $174,800. If you were to rebuild it, it would roughly be $149,500 (Home) + $29,800 (Land) + $15,000 (Finished Basement) + $17,000ish (Garage) = $211,300. That also doesn’t include the cost of landscaping, etc. that has been spend on the home. Now that’s a an almost $40,000 savings!!

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to discourage you from building your dream home. If you have a the perfect home you have envisioned, then building is the way to go. It can be just the way you want and out of materials you want. However, if you’re not specifically looking for something, then you should certainly explore some of the homes for sale in the real estate market.

Happy New Year 2011 From Murphy NC!!

The first work day in 2011 has officially began, and it is a time for us to get a kick start on the New Year and truly enjoy the opportunities before us. As I get ready to officially hit the grindstone, I thought I would share our New Year’s with you and even some pictures from it.

This year we celebrated the rolling in of 2011 at the famous Possum Drop in Brasstown NC at the famous Clay’s Corner! It was a LOT of fun and was even featured on CBS’s Sunday Morning television show yesterday! The live redneck drag show, great music with banjo pickin’, a FANTASTIC fireworks show, and of course, Opie the Possum, and all the other spectacles make for one of the most fun and unique celebrations in the United States

It’s right here in Brasstown (which is only 5-10 minutes from Murphy NC). Right at midnight, Opie the Possum was lowered and the crowd of at least a thousand people cheered! Clay Logan, the man behind the Possum Drop, did a wonderful job this year and even remembered to remember our Veterans and those lost at war.
