The Culberson Community of Murphy NC

The Culberson Community of Murphy NC is mostly known today for its small post office, Spur 60 (the 4 lane road running from GA to 64), and being the first community you come to in North Carolina from Georgia on Spur 60.

It’s interesting if you read the history books because in the late 1800’s, Culberson was far more commercially advanced than was Murphy. The railroad came to Culberson in 1887 from Marietta, Georgia. At that time, all the roads were unpaved and it would take a full day’s travel to get to Murphy, so it wasn’t as commercially viable at the time. Culberson was quite literally Cherokee County’s link to the outside world.

There were several stores that began there, along with a hotel (known as the Anderson Hotel), a warehouse, and even a distillery were part of the businesses being operated in Culberson as a result of the railroad. It was an incorporated town that even had a mayor!

It’s glory didn’t last long because the railroad to Murphy was completed in 1888 linking Murphy to both Knoxville and Atlanta. Once that happened, most of the commerce in the county was diverted to Murphy thus resulting in Culberson’s decline.

It’s interesting that Culberson has such a rich history, and it had the first opportunity in Cherokee County for commercial growth. Some things simply aren’t meant to be and now Culberson is known for its gentle laying land. It even has the Nottley River stroll right through it where you can enjoy some trout fishing 😉

Self Directed IRAs – an Excellent Way to Invest in Murphy NC Real Estate

Very recently, we closed a Murphy NC Real Estate transaction with almost 40 acres of land. It was located in the Brasstown area of Murphy, NC – and it was done in a Self Directed IRA. A Self Directed IRA (or SD IRA) is an excellent way to buy, invest, and own real estate.

The ability to buy real estate investments inside your IRA provides some excellent tax advantages. Your real estate investment essentially is provided the same tax advantages your Traditional, Roth, or SEP IRA receive through conventional investing – only in real estate!

For Example (a simple one): You buy a $100,000 rental house in your SD IRA. You collect monthly rents of $750, which is $9,000 per year for 3 years for a total of $27,000. At the end of 3 years, you decide to sell it and get $130,000. Because you own it in your SD IRA and all funds stay there, you don’t pay taxes on your rental income OR gains when you sell it! That’s a total of $57,000 you were able to shelter from taxes when you normally would have paid taxes on the rental income AND capital gains on the sale! A sweet strategy!  😆

As with typical IRS regulations, there are some requirements, conditions, and hoops you must jump through, however they aren’t too complicated.

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest – A GREAT Day Trip while in Murphy NC

The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is a great spot to take your family while you’re in Murphy, NC. No matter your age, condition, you name it, you can really enjoy the Forest. It has some of the BIGGEST trees you’ll ever see! It has a wonderful hiking trail that is rated as easy, so it’s perfect for families. The shape of the trail is a Figure 8, and you can choose to do all or half of it. In addition to the SUPERSIZED trees, you’ll find there are some gorgeous, rushing creeks along with very well maintained facilities. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the day. If you need directions to get there from Murphy, scroll toward the bottom and we’ve included them.

When we went, we took my parents and they had an absolutely great time! We brought sandwiches and made a day of it and ate overlooking amazing scenery and mountain views. Here are some of our pictures we took while we were there:

Directions to get there: From Murphy, take 74/129 headed East through Andrews. Keep going as it narrows from a 4 lane down to 2. You will make a left in Topton on 129 (also known as Tallulah Rd.). Follow this road all the way into Robbinsville and you will begin to see signs for Joyce Kilmer. You’ll pass a hotel, McDonald’s, and several other businesses. You will make a left on 143 (also called Tapoco Rd.) and follow it for roughly 5 miles or so to a stop sign. You will turn left onto Joyce Kilmer Rd and follow the signs the rest of the way in! Once you get in Robbinsville, just follow the signs – they’ll get you there with no problem. Enjoy and be sure to come back and comment how your trip went! We’d love to hear it.
