The Culberson Community of Murphy NC

The Culberson Community of Murphy NC is mostly known today for its small post office, Spur 60 (the 4 lane road running from GA to 64), and being the first community you come to in North Carolina from Georgia on Spur 60.

It’s interesting if you read the history books because in the late 1800’s, Culberson was far more commercially advanced than was Murphy. The railroad came to Culberson in 1887 from Marietta, Georgia. At that time, all the roads were unpaved and it would take a full day’s travel to get to Murphy, so it wasn’t as commercially viable at the time. Culberson was quite literally Cherokee County’s link to the outside world.

There were several stores that began there, along with a hotel (known as the Anderson Hotel), a warehouse, and even a distillery were part of the businesses being operated in Culberson as a result of the railroad. It was an incorporated town that even had a mayor!

It’s glory didn’t last long because the railroad to Murphy was completed in 1888 linking Murphy to both Knoxville and Atlanta. Once that happened, most of the commerce in the county was diverted to Murphy thus resulting in Culberson’s decline.

It’s interesting that Culberson has such a rich history, and it had the first opportunity in Cherokee County for commercial growth. Some things simply aren’t meant to be and now Culberson is known for its gentle laying land. It even has the Nottley River stroll right through it where you can enjoy some trout fishing 😉

Culberson Community in Murphy NC

Culberson Community is residential area in Murphy, North Carolina. In fact, it’s largest landmark is a small, humble US Post Office. It only acts as a place to drop mail, have PO Boxes, and purchase stamps/send packages.

Culberson is full of old homes and homesites  on the main road that have been home for local families for generations. In a few cases, you can find old dilapidated homes that have been neglected for years that were once home to a family. If those walls could talk, we’d learn a lot!

Because of its small size, it has only a handful of developments and Turkey Creek is one of them.

Culberson is located just barely North of the Georgia line in North Carolina.  It’s main road is Spur 60 – a four lane road with a left turn lane in the center. There are many side streets of off their such as Shady Grove Road, Culberson Road, Nicholson Road, Raper Road (named after a local family name), and several others.

Culberson has the beautiful Nottley River that runs through much of it. It’s low terrain offers many great places for pasture, cattle, flat land, and even homes with real yards. There are very few true “mountains” here that offer views and high elevations, which some folks certainly are not looking for. If you’re looking for something gentle that’s not hanging off the side of the mountain, Culberson has some really good opportunities to buy real estate.

Culberson has a great location with quick proximity to both Murphy NC and Blue Ridge, GA. Headed South, Spur 60 ties into Mineral Bluff, GA and ultimately Blue Ridge. Headed North, Spur 60 leads you right to the main road through Cherokee County – Highway 64/74.

The Watt Family of St. Augustine, FL Recommends The POLTROCK TEAM at Murphy NC REMAX!

Watt Family at REMAX Client Appreciation PicnicThe Watt family just recently purchased a property from us in Turkey Creek, which is a great Nottley River Community in Murphy NC. They wrote two testimonials – one on paper and one by email. We’ll share them both with you!

Testimonial to Office Manager: I got to meet John by accident. I was working with a real estate agent in North Georgia who basically did not want to be bothered with smaller real estate purchases. Out of frustration, I “Googled” Murphy N.C. and John’s real estate website www.MyMurphy.com came up. I placed a call to him and was immediately impressed with his personable attitude and knowledge of his properties compared to my interests.

John spent all day Friday and Saturday showing us properties that matched the criteria we gave him. On our first trip, we purchase property – a lot of that decision was based on his trust worthiness – he wasn’t selling us a bad deal.

I would absolutely call John for any future needs and have already passed his name and number to my co-workers.

I hope John is able to “ride out” the the lull in real estate the country has managed to find itself in. He would certainly make an excellent mentor to those new in the field. I look forward to working with him for any future transactions.

Email Testimonial: Just wanted to share my experience with the Poltrock team regarding our real estate transaction …. What a breath of fresh air to work with someone who’s sole purpose was to insure customer satisfaction! My family and I made arrangements to visit Murphy during the summer just to ’scout’ the area out for our retirement at a later date. John lined up 2 days worth of prospects from the criteria we gave him – he made us feel very comfortable and welcome in a totally new place. John recommended lodging, food, and even gave us a brief tour of Hiwassee Dam. John’s knowledge of the area and his ability to understand our needs resulted in a purchase in Turkey Creek on our first trip! He was extremely helpful during the ’process’, making a long distance transaction seamless. He also made sure we had comfortable accommodations on our second trip to Murphy just last week – staying at a rental that was as clean and comfortable as our own home. His trust and honesty laid the foundation of our friendship – Big Kudos for John and REMAX of Murphy. I would recommend them to everyone!

The Nottley River of Murphy, North Carolina

The Nottley River  in Murphy, North Carolina is unique since it a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) river. It is small and very clean. Nottley Dam is about 4 miles upstream, and development on the river is well managed. This means muddy runoff is not a problem and quickly runs clean after a rain. Despite increasing population on much of the river, most of the riverfront property is amazingly private. It is a great river with lots of opportunity to fish, relax, and even invest in real estate right on the river itself.

Wildlife on Nottley River
Because of the stable climate in the Murphy, NC area,  wildlife is abundant along the banks of the Nottley River. [Click the link for information on each animal provided by Wikipedia]  Beaver and otter are seen in addition to raccoon, opossum, groundhog, turkey, and deer. A gorgeous selection of birds can be seen throughout the year. Indigo buntings stay all summer along with tiny hummingbirds. Goldfinches can be found all year long and put on a beautiful show. Titmouses, bluebirds, house finches, and wrens are here all year along with chickadees. There are many bright red cardinals, which also happen to be the state bird of North Carolina. There are also two kinds nuthatches. Junkos are a nice addition in the winer as well are the geese and ducks that fly into local lakes. There are red-breasted and pileated woodpeckers, and in May, there are even some migrating cedar waxwings.

Fishing on Nottley River

For the trout fisherman, the Nottley River has a special interest. It is not stocked, but supports quite a population of wild rainbow trout, which is unique to our area. The spawn is in April. Access to the river is limited and there is little to no pressure of over fishing. Significant hatches of small grey caddis (sizes 16-18) occur in March to April and caddis (all day) and baetis mayflies (sundown) hatch all summer. Use this link for details of water releases from the TVA dams.

What Creates the Nottley River?

The Nottley River flows from Lake Nottley, which is a dam controlled lake formed by the TVA. It flows roughly 40 miles and spills in to Lake Hiwassee in Murphy NC.Murphy NC Area River Basins

Chances of Flooding on the Nottley River

Since Nottley River is dam controlled by the TVA, the chances of flooding are virtually non-existent. It has had extensive flood studies on the surrounding land on the River, and the annual chance of flood hazard is 0.2% chance according to the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Information System. With less than a 1% chance of flooding, the Nottley River is a very safe river to own real estate on compared to many of the others.

Real Estate on Nottley River

There are a lot of opportunities to own both homes and land with Nottley River frontage. One of best aspects of Nottley is your river property actually runs to the centerline of the river – meaning you actually own part of the river itself.

We have a Nottley River Front development in Murphy NC with several river front lots and all interior lots have river access from the common area. We would be happy to search for both homes and land for you and email them directly to you. Please use our Murphy NC Dream Home Finder and we’ll do the work for you!
