If you’re craving top-notch restaurant food prepared by a skilled chef, but you’d like a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Doyle’s restaurant is the perfect spot. Now, add a popular Tiki Bar with live music and seasonal patio dining to the mix. Welcome to Doyle’s Cedar Hill Restaurant, a Murphy, NC mainstay since 2002. Open Monday through Saturday for dinner, and weekdays for lunch, this popular eatery occasionally opens for special-occasion Sunday brunches and holiday dinners.

Perched atop a hill near the Andrews Road/Lowe’s stoplight, this local landmark is located in a spacious building that includes two dining rooms and an inviting bar. The famous Tiki Bar occupies an adjacent covered patio, with a wind-blocking plastic enclosure and toasty heaters for cooler weather. During growing season, the patio showcases hanging baskets, herbs, and vegetable plants for sale. Before the March 2, 2012 tornado paid Murphy a visit, the restaurant was nestled among several impressive cedar trees. Now, the landscape isn’t quite as shaded, but the restaurant is better than ever.

Now, let’s say you’ve arrived for lunch, served in the dining room and in the seasonal Tiki Bar. Lighter fare includes fresh trout cakes, spinach and artichoke dip, and chicken flatbread pizza. Also consider five tasty main-dish salads with optional enhancements. Or, opt for a hearty sandwich, including the grass-fed beef burger, Carolina BBQ sandwich, traditional Cuban panini, or garden veggie burger. Gluten-free bread is available upon request. Sides include a delicious creamy cole slaw and addictive sweet potato fries.

When the dinner hour arrives, Doyle’s adopts a fine-dining menu, but keeps its friendly, welcoming demeanor. Appetizers generally mirror the lunch menu, but the dinner entrees are in a class by themselves. Meat lovers will appreciate the Grilled Black Angus Ribeye and Filet Mignon. Seafood fans can choose from Shrimp Scampi, Grilled or Blackened Salmon, or Fresh Mountain Trout. Vegetarian diners gravitate to the Pasta Primavera and legendary Eggplant Parmesan. And let’s not forget the melt-in-your-mouth desserts.

Of course, it would be tough to enjoy a top-notch meal without equally good service. Skilled servers are a Doyle’s Cedar Hill Restaurant hallmark, always well-versed on the menu and willing to go the extra mile to accommodate their patrons. Tiny House and Tiny Homes in Murphy NC

FullSizeRenderThis month, Consumer Reports rolled out their March 2016 edition focusing on housing – “Boost Your HOME’S VALUE by 35%” it claims on the cover. This is a great topic we know well! I love Consumer Reports and want to dive into a few things. There are many topics in this edition I’ll likely review over the coming month, and right now, the topic of Tiny Homes is what I want to discuss.

They are trending nationwide and a lot of folks are considering the option of a tiny house for a getaway home or even as a permanent residence. Wikipedia calls a “tiny house” anything less than 1,000 square feet. My college apartment would qualify!  🙂

Locally in Murphy NC, the tiny house movement is not strong. We rarely see them here or people looking to purchase land to put one on. Don’t discount them though! On a recent trip to Murphy from Atlanta, we saw several folks advertising them alongside the road. We even have a vendor locally who can set one on the property for you if you would like to purchase one (email me for details if you want to purchase one and I will get you connected with him).

The tiny-house movement has been enjoying its media “close-up,” even getting an HGTV show, “Tiny House Hunters,” dedicated to those seeking living spaces no bigger than a school bus. But the truth is that newly built single-family houses are still getting bigger. In fact, we hit another record high for overall size in 2014 – reaching a national average of 2,657 square feet. Of the 620,000 newly constructed single-family homes in 2014, only 48,000, or about 8 percent, were smaller than 1,400 square feet. Meanwhile, about 10% were 4,000 square feet or more. “The tiny-house movement is pretty tiny,” says Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors, adding that homes smaller than 1,000 square feet made up less than 1% of U.S. sales from 2010-2015. “People might seek smaller units for affordability or environmental benefit, but they quickly realize that, in terms of comfort, it’s not a permanent solution.”

I personally was astonished at the size difference and the national average. It all makes perfect sense, I just never thought of it in such a manner. Whether you’re a seasoned bass or trout fisherman, or a first-time angler looking for a taste of mountain lakes fishing, you’ll find numerous good fishing holes within an hour’s drive of Murphy, NC. In fact, our mountain region offers eight major lakes, four delayed-harvest trout streams, and countless numbers of rivers and creeks. You could literally fish for weeks in a different place.

To better plan your fishing expedition, decide which species you’ll be stalking. If you’re a confirmed bass fisherman, check out Apalachia, Chatuge, Hiwassee, or Nottely Lakes. Chances are, other nearby lakes and rivers also have their share of bass just waiting to take your bait. While many locations offer banks fishing, some spots also feature public boat ramps so you can better stalk those crafty fish.

If you prefer fly fishing, you’re probably in the best spot on earth for catching trout. Cherokee County boasts several wild trout streams, along with hatchery-supported streams with date-specific releases. For starters, you’ll find wild trout waters in Cherokee, Clay, and Graham counties; along with world-famous Nantahala National Forest game land.

During trout fishing season, lasting from April through February, you’re likely to find anglers’ trucks parked in varied out-of-the-way spots. If you look closely, you’ll see fishermen standing motionless in their waders, trying to coax a wily trout out of its underwater hollow. For these guys (and ladies), catching the fish is satisfying, but the experience itself provides its own rewards.

Now, let’s say you’ve fallen hook-line-and-sinker for a mountain lakes fishing trip, and you can’t wait to get up here. First, book yourself a cozy mountain cabin from the friendly folks at Mountain Country Cabin Rentals. Next, get onto the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission website, and purchase a fishing license. In fact, the Sportsman’s License allows you to fish – and hunt – most game in our region. While you’re browsing the site, take advantage of the NCWRC’s great fishing-related resources.

When you arrive in Murphy, NC, round out your fishing gear at Appalachian Outfitters on Tennessee Street. If you enjoy collecting hand-tied flies, you’ll find a great selection here.
