Where do I take my trash to in Murphy NC and Cherokee County?

Trash disposal is essential no matter where you are, including in Murphy NC and Cherokee County. To address common inquiries about waste management, we provide a map from the Cherokee County Mapping Department showing local disposal sites. You can download this map from our Drive for detailed locations.

The Cherokee County dump, located in Marble, NC, is central to the area’s waste management. Additional disposal sites are accessible in Hanging Dog, Granny Squirrel, Peachtree, Martins Creek, Caney Creek, and the Mountain Folk Center, ensuring coverage throughout the region.

The Cherokee County dump serves as the main landfill and is part of a broader network of waste management facilities. Regular household garbage is not accepted at the Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill, established in the mid-1990s. Instead, household trash should be taken to designated containers by the main gate, free of charge for Cherokee County residents.

Businesses can utilize the Transfer Station at the Cherokee County dump to dispose of large amounts of trash, broken pallets, cardboard, debris, and other items. The fee for using the Transfer Station is $56.70 per ton.

The C&D Landfill itself has a tipping fee of $35 per ton for construction and demolition materials. The Convenience Center at the landfill is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., accommodating your disposal needs within business hours.

Recycling and Special Waste Handling in Cherokee County

Cherokee County also offers recycling services at the Cherokee County dump. Accepted items include cardboard, large steel, tires, batteries, appliances, and electronics—note that a $10 fee may apply for electronics recycling. While cardboard is accepted at the landfill, it is preferred that residents use dedicated recycling centers to ensure proper processing.

Hazardous wastes are not accepted at the landfill. For disposal of items like asbestos or other hazardous materials, residents should refer to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control for safe disposal guidelines.

Additional Services and Information

The old MSW landfill is undergoing a 30-year post-closure care period, which includes methane gas collection and other environmental protections. This site is not open to the public, but it’s part of our commitment to environmental stewardship.
