Helton Creek Falls is a Great Waterfall to Visit in Blairsville GA

Helton Creek Waterfall in Blairsville 2014 - 023When you’re in Murphy, there are so many great natural spectacles within a short driving distance. Just South of Blairsville GA and barely past Vogel State Park, you’ll find Helton Creek Falls. It is a short drive down a gravel road to a parking area. The hike is easy and about a half mile. You’ll find there are two falls – the lower fall and upper. We preferred the upper as it is tall and has a great swimming pool at the base. You can see it all from their observation deck or walk around it to enjoy the water itself. Be prepared though, the water is cold!

Directions from Murphy NC: Take 64 West to a left on 19/129 at the traffic light by the Flea Market and Hot Spot gas station. Follow into GA and Blairsville. Go straight through the traffic light to pass McDonalds. Take a left on the next traffic light on Blue Ridge Street. Go to the traffic circle and take the 2nd exit on GA-11/19/129. Go 11+/- miles to a left on Helton Creek Road just past Vogel. You’ll see the parking area and trailhead to your right in about 2 miles.

Panther Top Fire Tower Overlooks Murphy NC and Cherokee County

Panther Top Panoramic ViewMurphy NC can brag about one fine fire lookout station located here in Cherokee County. It is called the Panther Top Lookout Tower. Although it is not used as an active fire watch, it is used as a radio point for the Forest Service employees. It is normally gated off and cannot be accessed by vehicle, you can hike to it just about year around. They do open the road a couple times a year so you can check with the forest service with WKRK for availability. Even though it isn’t always open, it’s certainly a great Thing to Do when you’re here in Murphy NC.

The tower itself rises approximately 30′ in the air and was built in 1940. It has since been remodeled. It is situated on a summit that rises to 2,293 feet, so you get one amazing view. You can see all our pictures we took right here in this post. Amazing! Be sure to click the pictures to see larger images if you want. You can even see Lake Hiwassee in the distance.

To get to the fire tower, drive west on US 64 about 7 miles and turn right on Ranger Road. Drive 2.3 miles to a T and turn right on Panther Top Road.  Continue 1.0 mi. until the pavement ends and the road forks.  Take the right fork. And go toward the Panther Top Shooting Range.  Zero your odometer and follow the gravel road 1.2 mi. to where FS 85 actually turns left and uphill and FS 85A continues straight.  The junction can be missed easily if you are not watching for it.  FS 85 is normally gated to the tower itself.

The 40th Annual John C Campbell Folk School Fall Festival in Brasstown NC

Each year, the John C Campbell folk school hosts its Fall Festival on the first Saturday and Sunday of October. This year marks the 40th annual Fall Festival.

They also make a quilt banner representing each year that they host the fall festival. I always enjoy getting a picture of them and sharing them with you, so look below for links to one’s from previous years. There is some great talent that goes into making them. There’s also a picture of the long row of the banners from each year.

Inside the big barn, they always have some great music going on both days. Here is a wonderful bluegrass band that we caught a video of and wanted to share with you. He is singing about all kinds of stuff, including chicken bones! It’s pretty funny, but there’s no doubt it’s good, exciting music when you’re standing there watching it.

Basket from Folk School Fall Festival

There always some incredibly talented artist there as well. They are selling their products they handcraft. This year, we bought a beautiful handmade basket that is designed to hang on the wall. It’s quite large and is perfect for hanging Jessica’s grandmother’s blanket. It truly is beautiful and took a lot of talent to make it! There are so many incredible vendors there, there’s no way that she can leave without being in awe of the talent that is there. I even bought a handcrafted buffalo belt for only $30 that was custom fit for me! It was far better than anything you can buy in a store for essentially the same price.

When The Fall Festival comes back in 2014, you should definitely go! Go ahead and put on your calendar for the first Saturday and Sunday in October. We look forward to seeing you there! 🙂

Murphy Riverwalk in Murphy NC is a Great Part of Konaheeta Park

The Town of Murphy NC has some wonderful things for you to do. I personally love the Murphy Riverwalk and use it to walk and run as much as my schedule allows. It’s the perfect opportunity to get outside and see some gorgeous scenery and features of our area.

It has many different trails you can follow. It runs from the L&N Depot (which is a couple hundred yards to the left of Nantahala Bank and Chevelle’s Restaurant), along the Hiwassee River and the Valley River and all the way to Konaheeta Park. It then ties into the many different paths you can follow at the Park and even into downtown Murphy NC if you like.

It’s such pretty scenery I thought I would share a few pictures I took one day. Enjoy and I hope you take the opportunity to check it out! 🙂

John C Campbell Folk School Fall Festival 2012 in Brasstown NC

Every year, the John C. Campbell Folkschool has their Fall Festival on the first Saturday in October. Fortunately, this year was no different! We went on Saturday, and the turnout was astronomical! There were lots of vendors, music, people, and fun!

One of my favorite parts is all the booths for the vendors. You can find everything from hand crafted walking sticks, pottery, decorations, canoes, kettle corn, photography, paintings, knives, iron works, you name it! This year we took lots of pictures while we were there in Brasstown NC, so enjoy! 🙂

Mountain View Marina at Bear Paw Resort in Murphy NC on Lake Hiwassee

I must admit that we absolutely LOVE Lake Hiwassee in Murphy NC, and the four marinas that service lake goers are an absolute asset. Mountain View Marina is located right in the heart of Bear Paw Resort. Even though its located within a gated resort, it’s open to the public. Just tell the guard at the gate you’re headed the marina.

Mountain View Marina is approximately 30 minutes from downtown Murphy and close to the Hiwassee Dam. Certainly don’t let the distance deter you! It’s the nicest, most modern marina on the lake. It offers many things like:

  • Boat rentals of well maintained boats
  • Boat slips for on-the-water storage. It is the only marina you can leave your boat on the water year around. All others end up on the bank as the lake is lowered.
  • Boat lifts to keep your boat out of the water in your slip
  • Gas (what good marina doesn’t have gas? 🙂 )
  • A well stocked store with snacks, goodies, gear, ice cream, and everything you’ll need on the lake
  • NC Fishing Licenses
  • and lots more

You can call them at 828-644-5451 or visit their website at mountainviewmarina.com

We keep our boat there and have rented pontoon boats from them in the past. They always have great service, hospitality, and their boats are very nice. They even maintain a great site on Facebook and you can visit their website with more information at www.mountainviewmarina.com

Looking for real estate on the lake? Let The Poltrock Team help you! You can search all the Lakefront Homes and Homes in Bear Paw available here or let us do the work for you by using our dream home finder. See all the lakefront homes on Hiwassee and other surrounding lakes by clicking here. And don’t hesitate to call us on the phone! We’re here for YOU!

Here is a photo gallery of the marina in 2021. You can even see where they are adding additional slips.

See the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg Tennessee while You’re in Murphy NC

At 3 1/2 hours away, the Jack Daniels Distillery is a bit further away than most things I would recommend you do while you’re here in Murphy NC.  However, we took a day trip to go see it and it was absolutely worth it! The tour itself is completely free!

Downtown Lynchburg TN itself makes Murphy look like New York City! We were surprised at just how small the town is – and trust me – everything there revolves around Jack Daniels. From the restaurant to the one Inn in the town, Jack Daniels is the center of it all.

On the tour, I expected being able to see the whole process would be the most impressive part. However I found the most amazing thing was the smells. They let you smell the mash and everything else there and its truly surprising the variety of scents there are. The one that surprised me the most was when the mash was fermenting, it was bubbling like a witch’s brew and has an incredibly potent smell! Talk about clearing your sinuses!

This is one thing you should seriously consider checking out! It’s a lot of fun and we even bought one of the old whiskey barrels while we were there and have it on our front porch as a conversation and decoration piece. Enjoy!
