Ever heard the phrase from Murphy to Manteo? We hear it quite a bit! North Carolina is a BIG state and its a phrase that represents the sheer size – the westernmost and easternmost town in the state of NC.

It’s amazing to me! There are so many people that ride their bicycle, walk, and run the 545 mile trip from Murphy to Manteo. Every year, there are organizations and fundraisers that have races from one end to the other to raise funds for a cause. That’s dedication! I was reading several folks that did it in 7-9 days – that’s quick! Now to make the drive, it takes a solid 9 hours to complete the drive – and you never leave the state!

North Carolina is a gorgeous state and if you love the mountains of North Carolina, Murphy is the place for you to call home. In my very biased opinion, there’s no prettier or better place to live in the entire world than Murphy  :-) So while you’re here in the mountains, be sure to check out the area and buy some real estate! Marble is a community of Murphy, North Carolina and is located roughly half way between Murphy and Andrews NC. It was originally known as Marble Springs, which originated from the water that bubbled up along Hyatt’s Creek. Eventually, the name was shortened to just plain ol’ Marble. Still today, Marble Springs Baptist Church has held tight to Marble’s former proper name.

Interestingly enough, Marble was an incorporated town in 1914. It stayed a town for about 30 years – complete with a mayor!

Over the years, Marble had several manufacturing and/or industrial operations including a cheese factory, iron ore mines (and the ore was shipped to Philadelphia), lumber, sawmill, talc mill, grist mill, and much more. A common misunderstanding is that Marble was named after the marble mining operations that have been there for years. Certainly an understandable misnomer, Marble was well known for the marble mined there. They were famous for the “regal blue” and “sterling gray” marble.

Today, you still find several businesses and other things in operation today in Marble:

• TEAM Industries – this manufacturing plant mainly services the marine industry and specializes in right angle gear cutting and fractured connecting rods.
• Center for Applied Technology operated by Tri-County Community College – this is the old IOI building that was used for manufacturing. Today, our very own Tri-County Community College uses it to house their education and facilities for small businesses, electrical/electronics technology, machining, and HVAC (heating and air conditioning).
• Mulching Operation that sells mulch in large amounts (by the truck load)
• A new Dollar General retail store that just recently opened.
• TV and electronics repair
• US Post Office
• Marble Elementary School

Today, Marble is largely a residential area that is home to quite a few folks in Cherokee County. There are some gorgeous sections of Marble and is often favored for convenience to 64 and because it is situated between Murphy and Andrews.

Whether you live in an area, are moving to an area, vacationing, or are planning to buy a vacation home somewhere, an important question to ask is, “What is there to do?” While we have many great resources and places to go here in Murphy, North Carolina, there’s one major asset that deserves attention – especially this time of year.

Lake Hiwassee.  Yes, many areas of the entire United States have lakes, and beautiful ones at that. So why would Hiwassee be any different or better than another? Why should it influence a decision to move to Murphy or spend your days here in Western North Carolina?

Fisherman, skiers, boaters, swimmers, and all those who spend time on the water – have you ever been on a lake where the boats are so thick in the water you can’t get a truly relaxing moment? What about a place where the water is so choppy it beats you to death when you’re moving or skiing? What about a lake with so many homes and people along the shoreline that you can’t “get away?” That describes many of the lakes in the United States. They’re incredibly commercialized to the point you can’t enjoy the water in the way you hoped and intended.

That’s what makes Lake Hiwassee different. It’s surrounded by US Forest Service on 93% of Lake Frontage, so you can enjoy the lake as God and nature intended it. When you consider the lake itself, it is roughly 6,280 acres – that’s a lot of natural lake! To top this off, the fact the mountains of Western North Carolina surround the shoreline of Hiwassee and act as a barrier to holding back winds. This creates glasslike water and the perfect environment for water skiing, wakeboarding, knee boarding – you name it. Smooth water is sought after and found regularly on Hiwassee.

For fishermen, Hiwassee provides many great opportunities. Swimming within the waters, you’ll find Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Pike, Brim, Bluegills, and many more varieties of fish. With so many coves branching off the main channel, you’ll find lots of great fishing spots to spend your day with friends, family, or just a peaceful evening to yourself.

Four marinas bless the banks of Lake Hiwassee. If you would like to rent a boat or if you need gas and/or supplies, you’ll find them there. Duke’s Hideaway Marina, Shook’s Marina, Mountain View Marina, and Harbor Cove Marina are the four you’ll find. They’re all excellent places to start your day on the lake and you should certainly get going while the water is high and the temperature is perfect!

In Murphy, North Carolina, there are several sources of water your home or property may have access to. The most popular are:

• City water – you hook to the town water supply. This is not common in most homes.
• Private Well – you and only you own your own well and use it.
• Spring – a natural water source coming from out of the ground on its own
• Community or Shared Wells

Now since this topic is on community or shared wells, I’ll focus mainly on that. These sources are where multiple homes or structures use one (or in rare case, a series of) common water source. Wells are generally where our water comes from here, so most of the time you’ll see that it is a well.

In North Carolina, if you have a shared water system with more than 14 homes on it, you are considered a public water utility and it becomes governed by the state. Since this is a paperwork nightmare, you’ll generally find there are generally less than 14 homes a system. My home, for example, has a well that is shared with 12 of my neighbors. It works great for us.

How are costs shared? There are all sorts of arrangements and are certainly no hard and fast rule how this works. The most common is that everyone pays $15 per month (or $180 per year) for the use of the water. There’s no meter, so that’s a flat rate. Those funds are to pay for power and maintenance, if any. The leftover funds are generally put in a “kitty” to pay for future maintenance. In the event a pump goes out or something of that nature that costs more than the fund has, everyone chips in equally to pay for the maintenance.

It’s a great system because many wells produce more than one home can possibly use. When a well is shared, it lowers the cost of use dramatically for everyone involved. Not only that, it keeps the water “fresher” because you have a consistent draw on the well that keeps fresh water coming in and prevents the water from getting stagnant.

So what’s the difference between a shared well or a community well? It totally depends on who you ask. The banks that provide financing on homes have a slightly different definition versus our real estate guidelines. However, a general idea is this:

• Share well – one party actually owns the well and “shares” it with others. If you’re not the person who owns the land the well is on, you don’t have an ownership interest in the well, only a right to use it. This can be in writing and even recorded at the Cherokee County Register of Deeds to make it official and legal.
• Community well – all the users have an ownership interest in the well. For example, you may have a 1/10th ownership in it. You also have the rights to use it as mentioned above and it, too, is often recorded at the court house to make it legal.

With all that said, it’s a great way to have water in the mountains! Well water is my personal favorite because it comes right from the source! You could bottle my well water – it’s so good!
