When it comes to getting or needing medical attention while you’re here in Murphy NC, it’s great to have Murphy Medical Center (MMC) as our local hospital. Hopefully, you’ll never need it while you’re here, yet if you do, they’re here for you!

Murphy Medical Center is a 57 bed hospital, 120 bed nursing home, 14 bed Alzheimer Unit, and 24 hour emergency room. For the majority of medical needs, they can make sure you’re taken care of right here without ever having to leave Murphy. In fact, we’ve had a number of family members to make stops in MMC – of course we won’t mention any names or point any fingers!

Needs for Major Medical Procedures

In the event of major medical issues such as open heart surgery or other highly specialized needs, MMC is affiliated with Mission St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville NC, Emory in Atlanta, and Erlanger in Chattanooga. If you require it, they can easily refer, transport, or fly you there in the case of a medical emergency. That way, no matter your need, you know you’ll be pointed in the right direction for the best medical attention.

MMC is located in the Peachtree Community of Murphy, which is just 5 minutes Southeast of Downtown Murphy. Their physical address is:

Medical Infrastructure and Services

One thing I have to say about emergency services is that Cherokee County has a great infrastructure – and more importantly – the folks dedicated to it are the best of the best. The local EMT’s and ambulance services have many stations throughout the county, so when a need arises, they can be there to take care of you in a moment.

Other Medical Alternatives

Being that Murphy NC is located to close to both Tennessee and Georgia, we have two other local hospitals practically just across the county and state line. There’s Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA (which depending on where you are in Cherokee County, can be as little as a 10 minute drive) and Copper Basin Medical Center in Copperhill, TN (which is only 15 minutes away depending on where you are in the county). It’s nice we have so many options so close by!

 Wildcat Subdivision is located in the Martins Creek community in Murphy NC and is widely regarded as one of Murphy’s finest. It’s a gated subdivision with paved roads, underground utilities, a system of shared wells, and some beautiful homes. It features creeks, some spectacular long range mountain views, and is stable and established. It’s a great place!

Types of Homes in Wildcat

Wildcat features a good variety of different styled homes. It has quite a few chalet styled homes, yet it has many other homes too. There are some truly elegant more conventional styled homes. There are also rustic homes, cabins, you name it! In fact, a home in Wildcat was even featured on the Today Show! No matter your taste in homes, you’re bound to find the perfect fit.

Gated Entrance

There are several local subdivisions that have a gated entrance. However, Wildcat features one of the nicer subdivision entrances. Each owner gets their own gate code and remote access. It’s quite the nice system and keeps folks that otherwise might roam around.

In most of Murphy NC, land use is governed by deed restrictions and not zoning. Wildcat Subdivision is no different. The restrictions are quite common for what we’re used to here. My favorite sign to see in the whole world!

Ever heard the phrase from Murphy to Manteo? We hear it quite a bit! North Carolina is a BIG state and its a phrase that represents the sheer size – the westernmost and easternmost town in the state of NC.

It’s amazing to me! There are so many people that ride their bicycle, walk, and run the 545 mile trip from Murphy to Manteo. Every year, there are organizations and fundraisers that have races from one end to the other to raise funds for a cause. That’s dedication! I was reading several folks that did it in 7-9 days – that’s quick! Now to make the drive, it takes a solid 9 hours to complete the drive – and you never leave the state!

North Carolina is a gorgeous state and if you love the mountains of North Carolina, Murphy is the place for you to call home. In my very biased opinion, there’s no prettier or better place to live in the entire world than Murphy  :-) So while you’re here in the mountains, be sure to check out the area and buy some real estate! Marble is a community of Murphy, North Carolina and is located roughly half way between Murphy and Andrews NC. It was originally known as Marble Springs, which originated from the water that bubbled up along Hyatt’s Creek. Eventually, the name was shortened to just plain ol’ Marble. Still today, Marble Springs Baptist Church has held tight to Marble’s former proper name.

Interestingly enough, Marble was an incorporated town in 1914. It stayed a town for about 30 years – complete with a mayor!

Over the years, Marble had several manufacturing and/or industrial operations including a cheese factory, iron ore mines (and the ore was shipped to Philadelphia), lumber, sawmill, talc mill, grist mill, and much more. A common misunderstanding is that Marble was named after the marble mining operations that have been there for years. Certainly an understandable misnomer, Marble was well known for the marble mined there. They were famous for the “regal blue” and “sterling gray” marble.

Today, you still find several businesses and other things in operation today in Marble:

• TEAM Industries – this manufacturing plant mainly services the marine industry and specializes in right angle gear cutting and fractured connecting rods.
• Center for Applied Technology operated by Tri-County Community College – this is the old IOI building that was used for manufacturing. Today, our very own Tri-County Community College uses it to house their education and facilities for small businesses, electrical/electronics technology, machining, and HVAC (heating and air conditioning).
• Mulching Operation that sells mulch in large amounts (by the truck load)
• A new Dollar General retail store that just recently opened.
• TV and electronics repair
• US Post Office
• Marble Elementary School

Today, Marble is largely a residential area that is home to quite a few folks in Cherokee County. There are some gorgeous sections of Marble and is often favored for convenience to 64 and because it is situated between Murphy and Andrews.

Cherokee Lake is a beautiful place to have a picnic, fish, relax, and enjoy right here in Murphy NC. It’s largely brought to us by the US Forest Service, who is responsible for maintaining the grounds. On the grounds, you’ll find a great dock to fish from, a large picnic pavilion, picnic tables scattered around with grills you can use, and walking trails so you can venture into the woods and enjoy all that nature has to offer.

It’s located in the Hiwassee Dam community of Murphy right off of 294. To get there, you will take Highway 64 West, make a right on 294. Follow that a couple miles to the entrance to Cherokee Lake on your right hand side. It’s just before the brand new bridge.

Be sure to check it out, have a picnic, and enjoy the outdoors!

The National Rifle Association Dinner tonight in Murphy NC was a big hit! There was a huge turnout and lots of money was raised to benefit local shooting organizations, clubs, and much more. There were lots of rifles and pistols won – and not only that, there were lots of other goodies too!  The only downside was I didn’t win anything

It was catered by Rib Country – which was really good by the way! Thanks to everyone who put it together – it was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to it next year.

This fourth of July was a highly anticipated and much appreciated break for many people, and the same is true in Murphy NC! Yours truly was even looking forward a break and enjoying Lake Hiwassee.

Lake Hiwassee is absolutely beautiful this year. The water level is very high, the dam is in full operation keeping the level high, and all the marinas are in full swing! We got to put our boat in at the Hanging Dog Forest Service Campground and enjoy time with friends and family. Kudos to the Forest Service for the NEW boat launch – it’s great!

Murphy’s downtown fireworks were great! We missed the intro because we were a bit late getting there, and if it is anything like what we saw, it was a phenomenal show!

And most importantly, thank you to all our Veterans and all of those in the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and all other servicemen who are responsible for making America the greatest nation in the entire world. We owe our freedom to you and the 4th of July celebrates you and all those who have given their lives in the fight to free our nation and keep it free. Thank you for all you do.

With the shift in the economy, it’s become ever increasingly more and more popular to say, “Buy local!” I’ve seen billboards, bumper stickers, magazines, and more all over Murphy promoting shopping here. It’s certainly an easy concept – spend your money here and bolster our local economy. We’re talking about way more than some guy you’ll never see again at the checkout working for a living, that’s Joe’s cousin and he has 3 kids and a beautiful wife. You might even see him at church or at the grocery while you’re doing your shopping. We’re blessed with great folks in this town, and we need to help them and in turn, help ourselves.

It’s easy to run to the “big store” and buy everything. It’s easy to jump in the car and drive to Atlanta or Chattanooga and get your clothes, shoes, or widgets there (ever considered how much money in gas it takes to get there and back??). It’s easy to buy cheap imported junk that’ll break in 3 minutes when we could’ve bought it here, spent a few more bucks, and gotten something that will truly last – you know what I’m talking about!

We should make an effort to help our neighbors and help ourselves. After all, everything “trickles down” and eventually makes its way back to us. With that said, look for local shopping alternatives. This is easy.

Joe from Brasstown walks in and buys a house. Joe got a great new house and my business just generated some revenue. Here’s how it got spent: $200 – local sign guy. Everyone knows Realtors needs signs. He just made payroll for his employees for a day or two. $50 – Gas at Duncan’s or Fatback’s.  $50 – local restaurant. Take your pick, we have some great food here and that employees a lot of people – owners, chefs, wait staff. $100 – need new boots. Want to drive to Atlanta – NOPE! There’s Hogsed’s Sportswear or Clayton’s Shoe Store downtown. $50 – need cat and dog food. The easy solution is something like Wal-Mart. Again, consider Teresa’s Pet World or Wayne’s Feed Store. $100 – Need some tools. There are many options – Murphy Building Supply, Wilson’s, Dickey’s and several others. Not only that, they really know what they’re talking about and can point you in the right direction. $50 – Jessica wants some plants and Potts & Pebbles is a perfect place to get them with more expertise and plants that will live longer than a year.

The list goes on and on. Long story short, do your best to buy the things you can from locally owned and family businesses. You’ll be able to find most everything you need here, and when you can’t, ask them to order it! I was in Appalachian Outfitters a week ago and those fine folks offered to order practically anything I need! Most of our local vendors can do the same, so give them the chance. Help those out who help us every single day. Not only will you get the item you needed, but you may meet your neighbor and make a friend. You never know when you will need a helping hand!
