When it comes to getting or needing medical attention while you’re here in Murphy NC, it’s great to have Murphy Medical Center (MMC) as our local hospital. Hopefully, you’ll never need it while you’re here, yet if you do, they’re here for you!

Murphy Medical Center is a 57 bed hospital, 120 bed nursing home, 14 bed Alzheimer Unit, and 24 hour emergency room. For the majority of medical needs, they can make sure you’re taken care of right here without ever having to leave Murphy. In fact, we’ve had a number of family members to make stops in MMC – of course we won’t mention any names or point any fingers!

Needs for Major Medical Procedures

In the event of major medical issues such as open heart surgery or other highly specialized needs, MMC is affiliated with Mission St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville NC, Emory in Atlanta, and Erlanger in Chattanooga. If you require it, they can easily refer, transport, or fly you there in the case of a medical emergency. That way, no matter your need, you know you’ll be pointed in the right direction for the best medical attention.

Medical Infrastructure and Services

One thing I have to say about emergency services is that Cherokee County has a great infrastructure – and more importantly – the folks dedicated to it are the best of the best. The local EMT’s and ambulance services have many stations throughout the county, so when a need arises, they can be there to take care of you in a moment.

Other Medical Alternatives

Being that Murphy NC is located to close to both Tennessee and Georgia, we have two other local hospitals practically just across the county and state line. There’s Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA (which depending on where you are in Cherokee County, can be as little as a 10 minute drive) and Copper Basin Medical Center in Copperhill, TN (which is only 15 minutes away depending on where you are in the county). It’s nice we have so many options so close by!

I always enjoy showing homes and land to folks who are not from Murphy, North Carolina. It’s always fun to go into the Hanging Dog community and folks are always curious where such a bizarre name originated. It’s not a twisted tale of animal cruelty, rather it actually dates back to a legend from a Cherokee Indian who lived in the area. Sure, there are probably many variations to this local legend, however, here’s my version of where the name of Hanging Dog actually came from. Enjoy!

Take a step back in time… to a time when the Cherokee Indians ruled the region and there was no white man to be found. It was the middle of winter, and it was no ordinary winter. It was a long, bleak, and miserably cold. The brutal winter robbed the tribe of food. Much of the food reserves were depleted and the tribe was forced to find food or face starvation.

The brave’s hunting partner was his hunting dog. It was no ordinary dog; his innate skill made him a force in the field. Together, they ventured on an excursion to find a deer that could feed many hungry mouths with fresh venison.

Equipped with mere primitive weaponry of the time, the dog was instrumental in finding and pushing out deer that were well hidden from the naked eye. He pushed out a large buck that could provide the much needed meat for the tribe. He was able to draw his bow and arrow and hit the deer on the mark. The buck, being a large and strong animal, did not give in easily. He raced away from the duo with the dog close on its heels. The deer leaped across the creek and the determined dog would not let the deer escape so easily. He forged the creek only to be swept away in the strong current.

As he rushed down the creek, the dog was caught in a snag of briars and vines in the middle of the creek. Instantly realizing the predicament, the brave knew he, nor the tribe, could afford for his dog to perish. The dog was instrumental in successful hunts, and they could never find prey without the skill of the dog. He jumped into the creek to save his dog from a certain fate. He freed his dog and then the two were able to successfully track the dear and capture it.

Upon returning back to the tribe, the brave told his tribesman the story of the events that transcribed. In celebration of a meal and the survival of their prized dog, the Cherokee named the creek Hanging Dog.

As time drew on and Europeans entered the area, the name was popular. Ultimately, the large area north of Murphy NC became known as Hanging Dog – all thanks to a hunter and his dog.

 Wildcat Subdivision is located in the Martins Creek community in Murphy NC and is widely regarded as one of Murphy’s finest. It’s a gated subdivision with paved roads, underground utilities, a system of shared wells, and some beautiful homes. It features creeks, some spectacular long range mountain views, and is stable and established. It’s a great place!

Types of Homes in Wildcat

Wildcat features a good variety of different styled homes. It has quite a few chalet styled homes, yet it has many other homes too. There are some truly elegant more conventional styled homes. There are also rustic homes, cabins, you name it! In fact, a home in Wildcat was even featured on the Today Show! No matter your taste in homes, you’re bound to find the perfect fit.

Gated Entrance

There are several local subdivisions that have a gated entrance. However, Wildcat features one of the nicer subdivision entrances. Each owner gets their own gate code and remote access. It’s quite the nice system and keeps folks that otherwise might roam around.

Land in Wildcat

The beautiful entrance leads to a couple hundred lots. Lots range from close neighbors, to extremely private, less than an acre, and to more than 3 acres. There’s truly a wide variety to choose from! There’s also room for future development.

Restrictions

In most of Murphy NC, land use is governed by deed restrictions and not zoning. Wildcat Subdivision is no different. The restrictions are quite common for what we’re used to here. So you know what to expect, here’s a very abbreviated version:

• 1,400 square foot minimum
• No junk cars or appliances
• Satellite dishes must be less than 36 inches
• No mobile homes
• Cannot live in campers but ones may be stored on the property
• No commercial animals/livestock
• No noxious activities or nuisances are allowed on the property
• They’re basically things you’d likely want!

Marble is a community of Murphy, North Carolina and is located roughly half way between Murphy and Andrews NC. It was originally known as Marble Springs, which originated from the water that bubbled up along Hyatt’s Creek. Eventually, the name was shortened to just plain ol’ Marble. Still today, Marble Springs Baptist Church has held tight to Marble’s former proper name.

Interestingly enough, Marble was an incorporated town in 1914. It stayed a town for about 30 years – complete with a mayor!

Over the years, Marble had several manufacturing and/or industrial operations including a cheese factory, iron ore mines (and the ore was shipped to Philadelphia), lumber, sawmill, talc mill, grist mill, and much more. A common misunderstanding is that Marble was named after the marble mining operations that have been there for years. Certainly an understandable misnomer, Marble was well known for the marble mined there. They were famous for the “regal blue” and “sterling gray” marble.

Today, you still find several businesses and other things in operation today in Marble:

• TEAM Industries – this manufacturing plant mainly services the marine industry and specializes in right angle gear cutting and fractured connecting rods.
• Center for Applied Technology operated by Tri-County Community College – this is the old IOI building that was used for manufacturing. Today, our very own Tri-County Community College uses it to house their education and facilities for small businesses, electrical/electronics technology, machining, and HVAC (heating and air conditioning).
• Mulching Operation that sells mulch in large amounts (by the truck load)
• A new Dollar General retail store that just recently opened.
• TV and electronics repair
• US Post Office
• Marble Elementary School

Today, Marble is largely a residential area that is home to quite a few folks in Cherokee County. There are some gorgeous sections of Marble and is often favored for convenience to 64 and because it is situated between Murphy and Andrews.

The Culberson Community of Murphy NC is mostly known today for its small post office, Spur 60 (the 4 lane road running from GA to 64), and being the first community you come to in North Carolina from Georgia on Spur 60.

It’s interesting if you read the history books because in the late 1800′s, Culberson was far more commercially advanced than was Murphy. The railroad came to Culberson in 1887 from Marietta, Georgia. At that time, all the roads were unpaved and it would take a full day’s travel to get to Murphy, so it wasn’t as commercially viable at the time. Culberson was quite literally Cherokee County’s link to the outside world.

There were several stores that began there, along with a hotel (known as the Anderson Hotel), a warehouse, and even a distillery were part of the businesses being operated in Culberson as a result of the railroad. It was an incorporated town that even had a mayor!

It’s glory didn’t last long because the railroad to Murphy was completed in 1888 linking Murphy to both Knoxville and Atlanta. Once that happened, most of the commerce in the county was diverted to Murphy thus resulting in Culberson’s decline.

It’s interesting that Culberson has such a rich history, and it had the first opportunity in Cherokee County for commercial growth. Some things simply aren’t meant to be and now Culberson is known for its gentle laying land. It even has the Nottley River stroll right through it where you can enjoy some trout fishing

The Hiwassee Dam is one of my favorite things to see here in Murphy NC. If I’m showing homes or land in the area, I always love to take folks to see it. At 307 feet, Hiwassee Dam is the third tallest dam in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) system. It stretches an 1,376 feet from bank to bank of the river, and I must admit, is an amazing sight to stand at the bottom of and see just how big it really is. It was part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal to provide work for people and help bring the United States out of the Great Depression.

Named after the Hiwassee River, the dam is responsible for creating Lake Hiwassee and generating an impressive 185 Megawatts of power, which is enough power for roughly 185,000 homes in green power.

History

Construction began on Hiwassee Dam July 15, 1936, and it officially opened for operation on February 8, 1940. At a price tag of 24 million at that time, it was a sizable, and expensive, undertaking. It had dual purposes – to generate power for the region and provide flood control for the Chattanooga area, which is why you see the waters of Lake Hiwassee lower in the colder seasons of the year.

Building the dam required purchasing 24,102 acres. It took 3,836 acres that had to be completely cleared. What’s even more amazing is that it required 261 families, 462 graves, and 25 miles of roads that had to be completely relocated to a new area.

Go See It

So while you’re here in Murphy, you certainly need to go see the Hiwassee Dam. It’s a great area attraction that’s beautiful in its own right.

To get to it from Murphy, take 64 West. Turn right on 294. Follow to a right on Hiwassee Dam Access Road. Follow it a few miles and you’ll drive right over the dam.
